windows xp OTF font install registry fix for nvidia

I can’t take credit for this but wish to spread the information as it took awhile to discover this gem; Phinney on Fonts has a writeup about fixing various font install problems, particularly with OpenType (OTF) fonts in Windows XP. The #4 fix on his list is pure gold.

The problem: double-clicking on an OTF file to display it, or attempting to install the font, in Windows XP results in an error dialog similar to “The requested resource c:\some\path\to\font.otf is not a valid font file.

The diagnosis: “Windows expects the device driver to be a certain size (maximum). In this case, the Nvidia driver is slightly larger than expected. A simply registry entry will resolve the issue in WinXP.”

The fix: save the below as as xpfontfix.reg, double-click on it to merge it into your registry and then reboot the machine.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management]
"SessionImageSize"=dword:00000020

So far this has fixed a number of machines having the problem, giving it a two thumbs up over here.
